Hi, I just picked up a John Deere x485 to keep my JD 445 company!! Seriously, I got this off Craigslist for almost scrap price - and hope to bring it back to life. The PO had just had over $1200 worth of service performed - including new valves (exhaust valves were burned - 45 psi one size, 30 on other via compression test). Leakdown showed leakage through exhaust - so they pulled heads, replaced all valves, springs both cylinders. New gaskets, oil and filter, cooling system flush, new filter and plugs. Also had the brake, seat and PTO switches cleaned (mower engagement was intermittent). Battery was bad so new battery installed. He got it home and it ran great for an hour and seized!! Yikes. He said no oil in engine - but dealer swears it was put it. He worked out some deal with dealer - but was left with dead tractor. So, I've picked up up (only missing new battery) - and my winter project will begin! I've done a similar job on my 445 as it was over 2200 hours and had a bad head gasket. I pulled the entire engine (because it was easier to work on the engine on a bench) and replaced rings and general refresh of engine. It runs great today. I used the service manual on this site for the 445. I don't have the manual for the x485 and am hoping that a similar one (i.e. free) is available somewhere.
