Hi,
In 2006 I purchased a Craftsman riding lawn mower YS4500 54” cut 26 hp Kohler twin cylinder. After 122 hours of use I had to have the Hydro-Gear transaxle replaced because it was losing the ability to go up even the slightest incline. The engine was running okay but the power was not getting to the wheels like it did when it was new. The transaxle was replaced under warranty so there was no charge to me.
When the original transaxle was replaced at 122 hours I asked if I could keep the old transaxle. The service person said that I could keep it. So I stored it in my garage, thinking that one day I would take it apart and see what it looked like inside (see what made it tick).
I also asked the service person if I was stressing the tractor too much by cutting the grass on a portion of my property that was rather steep—his answer was yes that could be a problem—so I decided that I would no longer cut the grass in the area even though the tractor seemed to handle it okay. Now that area is cut with a 4wd Kubota-(not mine!)
At the end of summer in 2016 I had 520 hours on the clock. The tractor started to really slow down, even on flat & level ground. By the time I was almost finished cutting the grass it would not move at all.
I did some research online and I even called the Hydro-Gear company. The operator’s manual says: “The transaxle was sealed at the factory and fluid maintenance is not required for the life of the transaxle.” What was the first thing that the factory rep asked me??? Have you changed the fluid in the transaxle!!!!! Of course I said NO--it says I don’t need to change the fluid!! Well—ah—ummmm-go ahead and change the fluid—that may take care of the problem.
